Q 1 : what should a PWS should do -when he has to face daily UNCOMFORT ZONE, like answering the roll call in class daily and stammers. Daily in front of whole class he stammers, daily he feels-shame,fear, guilt. will he not loose sel confidence in himself?

Ans: He should take a print out of Item nine on this link (Instructions for Teachers), give it to the Class Teacher, along with an application, requesting that his attendance should be recorded on visual basis, ie. the teacher should look up and the student should just raise the hand OR they should work out some other/ alternative arrangement.
http://www.stammer.in/faq/31-cat-general/58-stammering-faq.html
PLUS- he should attend 3 - 4 Comm WS and or SHG.

I read one TISA blog post - ARE YOU UPSET. In it written :
"So come out from your COMFORT ZONE
and face boldly the challenging
situations without getting UPSET with
the failures."

But my question is what should a PWS should do -when he has to face daily UNCOMFORT ZONE, like answering the roll call in class daily and stammers. Daily in front of whole class he stammers, daily he feels-shame,fear, guilt. will he not loose sel confidence in himself?

"what should a PWS should do -when he has to face daily UNCOMFORT ZONE, like answering the roll call in class daily and stammers "

Class 6th :i used to come late to the class..and would stand outside the door while roll call was going on and would barge in to the class just when my name was about to be called out..teacher would see me physically and mark me present..it was an evasive technique..with an inbuilt risk of me being called a habitual late comer..

Class 7th : started facing the situation on the face..and eventually failed most of the time with heavy bouts of stutter and face cringing..eyes shutting tight ..shivering..feeling heavy..dizzy..ashamed.exhausted...a simple task like responding by saying "present mam" would haunt me every morning..every next period.. ...i hated school because of the roll call system..that was the most difficult subject...

Class 8th

I was approached by my English teacher and was told that i was good at written English and supposedly if i work more on it i could start juggling with words .and that would help me while speaking..

Back then I didn't understand the connection between my stutter and reading but regardless I got involved in reading..reading all kinds of books..Indian..foreign..whatever i could get hold of..it expanded my world outlook..my perspective..gradually but surely..

Class 9th : My strategy towards roll call changed..i began to see it as only a small issue ..which i had to sail through to see the bigger picture- which were the actual subjects..i started dealing it with innovative ideas every day..

:I would change my voice and answer
: i would use some weird accent
: Some time i would just stand up and smile at the teacher..
:Another time i would say :Good morning again teacher as an substitute of present mam....

I became more spontaneous ..as i could choose any weapons even if one of them jams..my brains rate of making decision flowchart seemingly increased..
And i started enjoying it...i started a interesting fun war with my stutter..and the entire thing made others laugh too..so i became an entertainer from a grumpy sad tensed guy...i started laughing at myself more..and that increased my self confidence..because only those who are self confident can make jokes about themselves..

I still stutter , but my focus has changed more towards the content ..It would be sadder if a discussion lacks any content and on top one stutters too..

so work around all aspects of communications..and that should do the fix..

@Anonymous ,

And who says that just because some stutters, he/she cannot do well in others spheres of life which are not dependent so much so on speech..

Train your body..train your mind..train your soul...expand your horizons..accept stuttering as something you were born with..and look inside yourself and find out how nature has compesanted this error .

Have a grt weekend..

My daughter is doing 10th and she has this problem.I took her to FIVE, a centre for stammering kids and latter i found that she is not totally enjoying it.When i consulted the Doctor,i was told that leave her and she will be alright. But now i see her having the problem and guess for sure it has devloped a bit more. She is reluctant for any treament ,even when i just hint that.I personnely also felt my family Doctors way earlier and now i feel if i have done injustice by not insisting on treament. She is a sensitive girl...At chennai, can anyone recommend a place for my daughter...She loves music and oflate i saw in Hindu, through cartnatic music someone is helping kids to overcome this issues..?
kindly,help...

Anon above: You can try other SLPs but working with young children who stammer is a really difficult and very few SLPs really specialise in that area. Classical vocal music and theater (acting) can help. Someday, God willing, TISA will start summer camp for such children..

How to cure stuttering problem

Hello friends, I wish I could share my personal opinion with you. First I would suggest that steps need to be taken by the Govt. or TISA to educate the society on stammering. Say an Advertisement in TV telling that stammers are not poor communicators and informing people about great scientists and leaders who had stammered. This would give an uplift for those stammerers who have not been self-motivated. Further, most HR/Interviewers would learn about this if they haven't. This must be done preferably than declaring it as handicap. Pls. this would help many stammerers.
Rather than aiming for sympathy try to promote pride, a step ahead and not a step below.

@murli dharan: stammering is due to a combination of factors- physiological, neurological, psychological and environmental.
and its very from person to person. ATTEND NEXT TISA COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP OR NATIONAL CONFERENCE.you will learn latest & effective fluency shaping techniques, meet many stammerers, who are successful in his life.and do self-analysis in TISA activities and work on it.

Hi to all. I am under the OBC category. I am a Hotel management Graduate and an MBA in HR & Finance. 5 yeras of experience and now jobless from over a year.

Employers don't count my experience, they just want fluency in speech. I my bad-luck, the previous companies I worked in are no longer operating their operations, they have left india because of lack of timely payments from suppliers.

I tried to apply for Governmt jobs through the Employment Exchange and all but to no avail.

Does stammering come under the handicap Clause of the Government of India? So that I make a certificate for that and it helps me get a job?

Response awaited.

I have got stammering problem not very severe.Recently i got a job in an IT company. But i have a strong determination to work as a civil servant.
Is my stammering going to prevent me from getting into civil services? even my parents say that stammering is going to prevent me from getting IAS.
Please help me in this regard as i am getting demotivated to appear for civil services at this point when i have not yet started my preparation.

TO ANINDITA- Difficult to forecast. Biut it depends on your communication skills. Some pws manage their communication well and so are able to get in a job of their liking.. I think, unless you try, you will never know. If you fail- what fear? you would have gained some real experience.. So, go on..

dinakar siva teja said...

hello every one i am siva teja dinakar from hyderabad
i am not caring about my stammering, i am not doing any thing for my stammering (yoga, slow speaking, bouncing)
just i am following these techniques when i am in google hangout or SHG meatings other wise i am speaking normally with stammering.
which sign this is, is this fine for not following any thing?

Satyendra said...

If it solves your problem, it is PERFECTLY fine. PWS must have the freedom to live and practice what s/he wants rather than dictated to, by anyone, authority, SLP or other pws. Bottom line is: whatever you say, should be understood by the other party AND you should be comfortable while saying it... Communication is more important than fluency, this or that technique. And your focus should be on the content, on the other person.. Good techniques take you there, in that "zone". Once you are there, who cares?

Dear Manjunath
We are not aware of any good job which might suit a stammerer particularly. If you work on your communication skills and professional skills, you might find a suitable job easily. To do this- you should attend a SHG, join a group (whatsapp, Google hangout etc.)- attend skill based short courses and KEEP on applying for different jobs.. You are bound to succeed, as many PWS have..
