SHG Meeting Chandigarh

For the meeting I reached the venue Sector 42 lake, Chandigarh at 9.00 am. Jasmeet , Mr. Paramjeet, Shri Parmod Kathuria were already there. We were joined by Shashank, Nitin, Vineet and Mukul. We all welcomed Shri Kathuria in the group as he was attending the meeting for the first time. We all gave are self introductions to him. He also introduced himself to the group. As per the practice we did 10 minutes Anapana Vipassana meditation to calm down our agitated mind. It was followed by a hearty laughter exercise  session. Then we did breathing exercises to tone up our speech parts. We had sessions of slow speaking, voluntary stammering and prolongation. It was emphasized to never give up and keep working on our speech, which is the only mantra to overcome the fear related to our communication. Mr. Kathuria was requested to attend SHG Meetings regularly  and keep  guiding  us with his rich experience.
The meeting ended with a commitment to meet regularly. All were happy and satisfied. Other members of the group who could not attend because of other engagements are requested to attend next meeting.

News @ Hyderabad SHG meetup on 21st Feb

Report by Ramu.
We were 15 members this week, We got three more new people this week. Two of them came to know about Tisa through the article in local news paper and one is through internet. Along with them we were 6 at 9am. So first we started the meeting by asking the new people about their stammering experiences and remedies they went through and the results of their trails. And it was followed by little intro about TISA and activities we do at shg meetings for the sake of new people. As time went on count has increased and we were 15 till 10am.

New faces in TISA

Today Sumit a TISA member from Patiala brought his friend Shubham Rana from Jalandhar to my office. Patiala has already started SHG with Anupinder as Lead. At present there are around 6 members and they are growing. We discussed about the basic principle of Acceptance and how to work on it.I requested him to regularly read TISA blogs. He was also motivated to start a SHG at Jalandhar. Before that he has been asked to attend a few meetings at Chandigarh to which he agreed. It was nice to see that he has no hesitation with his stammering and was openly discussing about it. Awareness about Stammering has grown a lot due to TISA. I think we can repay the debt by only motivating more and more PWS to start SHG at their respective places. The meeting ended with an assurance to meet on Sunday morning at Sector 42 lake Chandigarh.
May all beings progress on the path of communication.

My Sudden relapse

I have been a regular member of SHG for a while now (6-7 months) and things couldn't have been better. With Bangalore SHG, I have explored new horizon of my speech which I didn't realize ever existed. I gave my first ever speech in life (last December), recited poetry in front of at least 20 people (for which I even received first prize), asked questions in the meetings, some of the times even answered few of them with full confidence. But as it happens to all good things, it ended too. I relapsed.

TISA Dehradun SHG Meeting- 21st February, 2016

Hey everyone! Hope you all are doing well. This Sunday, TISA Dehradun SHG organized the communication meet at Gandhi Park in Dehradun.

Total No of participants- 10

Name of the participants- Ashish, Dinesh Kumar Soni, Dinesh Kumar, Laxman, Harmeet, Jasmeet, Akash, Mohit, Chandra Mohan, Ujjwal (non-stammerer).

As usual, most of the members were late! From next time, we have to be more punctual otherwise it ruins all the plans. Anyways, we had 4 new members in this meet. Akash, Dinesh Kumar, Laxman and Jasmeet.

We started with the introductions. Everyone introduced themselves with an amazing stutter and clutter !! They told their name, occupation, address and phone numbers. And as usual, we had uninvited guests as well who are always welcomed to provide that deadly glare !!

In this meet, we planned to had mock interviews of the participants. For this special task, we had a special guest. Mr Ujjwal Aggarwal from Group Flyway Enterprises, a job consultancy firm based in Dehradun, came specially to conduct the interviews. In the panel, we had Mr Ujjwal and Mr Dinesh Kumar Soni, Senior Economic Investigator.

According to the "candidates" they had the actual experience of an interview and it really gave them the required exposure. At the end, Mr Ujjwal and Mr Dinesh gave their valuable suggestions to the candidates.

Then we had a 3 member role play activity. Surprisingly, this went very well. This is because most of the members were new, so we thought it might be little difficult for them. But they were so comfortable among themselves, that they performed outstandingly.

Harmeet and Jasmeet, SINGH Brothers left early as they had their business meeting arranged, Mr Ujjwal left early as he had a business appointment.

There were other things in the agenda as well but due to time constraint, it could not be completed. For the next time, we will be having a time keeper and hopefully, we will move indoor for the further meetings.

Till then, Good bye and have fun !! Haklao Magar Pyaar Se...

Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam.! ( I found my self in "SUDHI" )

The movie was awesome.....it touched my soul..!!!

I found my self in SUDHI (actor). The problem which faced by sudhi that i used to face in real life.......like....  asking for TICKET (its seems that i m going for a war :D :D..hahaha)
while negotiating with people who can judge me (specially girl....:-p)
while giving attendance in class room and bla bla bla bla        (oohhhhmyyyygooood......in school time my friend used to give my attendance behalf of me)

Acceptance and bouncing technique was there and it really help sudhi to come out from fear and hesitation.

Now i am looking for kalyani (hahahaha :-p).....such a nice lady who hooked up with sudhi and help him to overcome his stammering.
if any kalyani will ask me to marry....i will immediately say "yes".....hahahahahah....!!!
many many thanks to director and cast to create such a fabulous and Inspirational movie.

 One step Towards ACCEPTANCE.....!!!

I really inspired from that movie. I put TISA LOGO (haklao magar pyarse) as my whatsapp dp....!!!! I felt good. Three person asked me about TISA and i answered for the same.

keep smiling....keep talking

Thank you...!!

Stop being racist.

Yes papa",said the girl in her mid 10s.
Kitni bar kaha hai..dhoop me mat khelo..kaale ho jaoge- her father screamed.
Oh common papa ,how can one become dark by exposing to sun!!
After all,how does it make difference between black land white.,
I don't like this at all..stop being racist.
Her father fell silent, and ashamed too, perhaps he could not believe it was coming from her own daughter...
She has gone back to play.

Bangalore stammering SHG – What was ailing it initially and how is it now?

Initial meetings
The first meeting of Bangalore stammering SHG happened on 13-Sep-2009 and it went on till 11-Apr-2010 with at least a few participants. After this there was a meeting in which nobody turned, up other than me, and then there were no meetings for a long time. After a few months Karthk took the initiative to rejuvenate it and decided to meet at Cubbon park on alternate days in the morning from 28-Aug-2010. The details of the meeting on 28-Aug-2010 can be read at http://t-tisa.blogspot.in/2010/08/bangalore-shg-meeting-on-28-aug-2010.html and http://stammer.in/menu-shg-activities/57-bengaluru-shg/373-bangalore-shg-meeting-on-28-aug-2010.html.  This went on for some time but didn’t continue for long.

 What went wrong?

When I look back I feel the factors which contributed to the downfall of SHG initially were these; expectation of the participants that they would find a cure in SHG, not much attractive activities in SHG which help them in improving the communication skill and the same person doing the role of coordinator. Let me go through these points a bit more in the following sections.

Most of the people consider SHG as a place where they could learn some techniques which would cure their stammering. Most of these people come to SHGs after trying different methods like speech therapy, psychotherapy etc. They would have not seen much improvements in their situation or would have experienced relapse after seeing improvements. They think SHG might give them a lasting cure. SHG surely is a place where they can learn some techniques used by fellow stammerers but TISA and SHGs try to convey the message that there is no known cure for it. In other words, it remains with us throughout the life though there are some cases in which a cure is reported. We can manage it.  For that, we should accept ourselves as stammerers and learn how to deal with it. We have to do those things from which we always used to run away and work on our communication skill. SHG is to be used for that. Whenever these points about cure and acceptance are conveyed some of the participants become upset which subsequently lead to them not turning up. May be, the coordinator in me failed in conveying the points clearly or in a more diplomatic way.

The second point was about working on communication skills and giving opportunities do things which the participants were scared to do. Though the SHG was run taking into consideration the views of the participants and we had some activities like slow reading, speaking about a topic etc, there was no structured agenda. By nature, most of the stammerers are introverts and they do not open up. So there were not much inputs about the activities they wanted in SHG. So most of the time it was limited to introductions, discussions about the problems faced, practicing some of the techniques and very rarely somebody presenting a topic. It would not have helped them in improving their communication or attacking their fears.

The last point was about the same person running the SHG continuously. Initially though Amit was available as a coordinator, I had to take up the role of coordinator due to his non availability. So the SHG was run on a monotonous way, though I used to take the feedback from the participants on the activities they wanted. Unfortunately as pointed out earlier, not much ideas came out. Though we tried running the SHGs by identifying a volunteer who would take over the coordinator role in a particular meeting, it was again run in the same way! So fresh ideas were not coming up.

How the SHG was revived

Though the SHG was dormant for more than a year, some more people like Dinesh joined the SHG google groups and they suggested, modelling the SHG meetings on some of the famous personality development and communication skill development programs. The discussions went on for some time and Dinesh planned a meeting on 26-Feb-2012 at Madiwala. The details can be read at http://t-tisa.blogspot.in/2012/02/bangalore-shg-meet-26th-feb.html

How is it different now?

Though the SHG still conveys the message that there is no cure for stammering, that is more than offset by addressing the other two issues with the previous SHG. May be, the present coordinators are better than me in conveying the messages!

As was mentioned earlier, the SHG meetings are now modelled on some of the concepts from well-known programs. They are well structured and the attendance in the meeting is steady. This itself is a proof that the people are getting benefits and are enjoying the activities. I understand that they also plan get-together and some outdoor activities. The details of the meeting are available in TISA blog.

The meetings are now run by different people on a periodic basis. It helps in giving a chance to different people in taking up leadership role and also in bringing in fresh ideas. Previously it was held in Madiwala and now it has come back to the old place of Cubbon park. Some of the old participants like Pramod, Karthik are still active. They also have a WhatsApp group which helps in staying connected.

This means most of the issues plaguing the initial SHG were taken care of and it is running successfully now. Attending SHGs will be the best way to deal with stammering. If interested the person can even take over the role of the coordinator! So please go ahead and join the Bangalore stammering SHG by sending a mail to shgblr@googlegroups.com.

Meeting with a recovered PWS.

Shri Parmod Kathuria, a recovered stammerer,  visited my office today. He has recently retired from a very senior position of H. P. Electricity  Board. He remained in my office for more than an hour. We discussed in detail our personal experiences on stammering including how family , friends , relatives , teachers and specially parents have a role in stammering. It was all a journey right from our childhood to our present position. It was all very- very emotional recap. The lesson was we need to be sympathetic with stammering of our children and not curse it. The youngs are quite fortunate that there is much awareness with stammering today.  Because of internet and WhatsApp. We were not that fortunate. However in my view we are still lucky that we came in contact with TISA in this life, whereas there are a few who struggled all there life with no knowledge on stammering i.e. the reason, what  causes it and how to manage it. Classic example is of Shri EMS Namboodripad, three times Chief Minister of Kerala, which I invariably quote, who struggled throughout his life with stammering. But hats off to him  and his courage,  he fought it bravely and let never him down because of his speech handicapcy.  I suggested Mr. Kathuria to try Toastmasters club and do a 10 days course of Vipassana meditation, from which I have benefitted. He assured to consider it. We firmly resolved that we shall keep working for connecting PWS with TISA. The meeting ended with a promise to keep meeting regularly.
A big thanks to Dr. Sachin to facilitate organizing the meeting.
May all beings be Happy, Peaceful and Liberated.

CHANGE....!!! What? Why? How?

Hello Guys..

I have seen video of 3 Principles of Change by Dr. Sachin:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs9Zl0YvZV8)

so i want to share my plan with you

CHANGE
What to change ?
I want to change the two things.
  • my mindset
  • my speech pattern
Many time i afraid to pickup the call in public place like bus, train, office and etc.i can also say like that "i have phobia of attaining the phone-call".
"fear of stammering it self cause stammering"
(From 15th feb 2016 i had picked up the every call although i did many phone-calls)
"overcome the stammering" is the goal of every stammerer.

Why to change ?
I am student of mechanical Engg. (diploma) and right now i m trainee at L&T(Mumbai). but after this i want to do further education, job and bla bla bla.....!!!!.....soooo....!!!!! I not suppose to face any problem due to my stammering.
i want to change my mindset because every time i m leaving in my head.....i want to out from that darkness.

How to change ?
" Manage the stammer before stammer manages me"
  • Acceptance :- 50% of the problem will solve by acceptance. i accepted to some extend to my self as a stammerer. I am trying to accept it fully 100%. and i will do it. " acceptance doesn't mean giving up"
  • Attain the SHG meeting in every week.
  • keep talking to stranger.
  • chanting:- Chanting the god name...it will result on the control over the mind. Spiritual power is also important in life. Chanting gives spiritual power.
  • Daily reading practice
  • Yoga
  • keeping the things which motivates.
At the end...
                         "KEEP SMILING"
I wrote all things in my note pad and every time i kept it with me......so it reminds me that i have to do the change.

Thank you.
Bhandava Narendra

Insider view

Statutory warning: This is high academic stuff. Not for you, if you are just looking for a "technique" or "cure". BUT Certainly for you if you want to VIEW and understand your stammering in a NEW LIGHT. OK, enough of warnings, now go for it and let the stammering revolution go from strength to strength...

Hi, I am Suraj Kumar. I am 23 years old. I am an IIT Delhi graduate. To more about me, visit my page at www.thinkingonindia.in/suraj-kumar

The Stuttering Hexagon
The Stuttering Hexagon
The Stuttering Hexagon is theory put forward by John. C. Harrison (look at Source below) to explain stammering. It is the most complete theory behind stammering as believed by the author. Stammering is a Blessing, an Opportunity for Learning and Growth

Dear friends, this is Prasannajit. I have collected some knowledge from different sources and I want to share that with you.
Analysis of Stammering
CAUSE: Root cause of stammering is fear, stress and pressure. Fear of what people will think/say. Pressure to speak instantly, speedily like others to prove that you are a fluent speaker and to finish speech as soon as possible. Any person when stressed beyond a limit, stammers. Stammers remain very much stressed and depressed due to their stammering. All these fear, stress and pressure come out in form of stammering. So stammering is nothing but a manifestation of inner stress n fear. Fear is always in mind (sub-consciousness).

chanchal is quite today

Chanchal is quite today, while I am done writing this post .
Unfortunately, I can't count on him..he has cheated me as recent as yesterday. He told me,he would help me make a video in the park, but backed out after he saw some folks walking nearby.
Alas,he was weeping coming home.I kept yelling at him.
He says never again I shall defy..but today also...the same...

But today I am wise and a lil bit compassionate also than I was a day before.
I have forgiven myself for being so rude.
'Chanchal is none but my mind '

Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam – A Stammerer’s Review

Here's my review of the Malayalam movie "Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam", which is based on stammering.

Indian Cinema has traditionally seen stammerers (PWS) as comic characters. Lately, there were protagonists who stammered… But a Malayalam film - Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam comes as a fresh air, which revolves around a person who stammers and is probably the first Indian film that is primarily about stammering.

SHG Meeting Chandigarh

SHG meeting was organized at lake in sector 42, Chandigarh on 07.02.2016  morning. I reached the venue at around  9.30 am. Jasmeet, Sumit, Gaurav, Mukul, Kapil were already there. We started the session with 10 minutes of Ana- pana meditation to calm and relax our mind which is continuously agitated. Ana- pana is the first step towards Vipassana meditation. We all felt relaxed after the session. It was followed by laughter excercises which is also very beneficial. Then we did some deep breathing excercises including shouting. It was followed by a round of self introductions . Then we had prolongation and voluntary stuttering sessions.
After the above rituals we had a round of park and interacted with strangers applying voluntary stuttering , which was the real test to judge our improvements.

All were very much satisfied with their improvements. We dispersed with a commitment to meet regularly.
In Tricity there are around 25 members . All are requested to meet regularly in SHG.

TISA Hyderabad Chapter meeting on 7th Feb 2016

Hello Friends, You are welcome to THE INDIAN STAMMERING ASSOCIATION Self Help Group meetings. These meetings will make you know what stammering is about and how we can control our speech patterns in day to day life. Here We Stammer at Ease.It is proved that if we stammer with easiness then stammering can be dissolved from speech. We use many techniques which could help us in clearing blocks in speech.

Here we list our challenges and conquer them in group tasks, So you wanna conquer challenges and taste the confidence ? Tomorrows main agenda is prepared speeches and voluntary stuttering.

My thoughts on stammering

Hello Friends,

My Name is Nikhil Iyer. Right from the age of 10 yrs, I have been stammering. But instead of looking at it as a problem we need to treat stammering as our friend and move on with it which will remove the fear we are facing because of stammering. I joined TISA at the end of December-2014, and learned the value of acceptance. It's very difficult to accept yourself and even if we have accepted ourselves 70%, we are successful. I have seen many different kind of people in my life. We have so many different languages in our country. Each language follows different culture and different traditions. Sometimes some people are good in English, some in Hindi, some in both,
some people in their regional language. If we are talking with people who do not understand a particular language we take the help of a translator. but everywhere what we follow is communication. Communication is the most important thing. It could be silent or it could be with some action or in a simple way. It differs from person to person.

Communication Workshop 2016 in Dehradun, 24th Jan- 26th Jan, 2016

Comm WS Report
Media: Times of India, Daily Pioneer, Amazing Pics (Thank you, Ashish Lakra)
Day 1: About 20 participants. Many from Delhi. One from Vijaywada. One from Makrana, Rajasthan. One from Jaunpur. A senior couple (Dhruv's parents) from Punjab. After a little intro and a little conceptual background, participants were requested to conduct mutual "stammering Interviews". Then, they went to local market for practicing the skills with strangers - also had lunch.

We gathered again at SR ashram by 3 pm. The scripts for role plays were distributed. Participants quickly went thru the scripts and assigned roles to their members. Some energizers. Some free flowing discussions - about stammering, its nature, why this or that.. We ended by 5 pm. But how can you end the ongoing discussions among pws..? Never.
So, many participants went to FRI, to carry on..

Day 2: We began at 9.30 am. Four participants (Vikas, Mohit, Ashish, Vishal) were sent off to MCF to interview the team there. Rest of us went to Gandhi Park in the heart of the city. Mrs Kathuria spoke to the person I/C of District Information Departments' pandal in the park; As a result she got us the mike, stage and the entire venue for free (you see, why we should be involving our parents in our struggles and missions..?).

We did role plays, to cheering audience. Some ex-tempore stuff, songs, Dr APJ speech by Abhay etc etc. We concluded with an on the spot role play: A funny Scene from a moving local bus. Mohit was the conductor in the great hurry. All the pws were the passengers. Buying the ticket was the crux of the play. We all had LOTS of fun.. We ended with slogan- Haklao magar Pyar se.. to which audience also joined.

Two hours later, the scene changed: we were at FRI. The vast lawns. With a mighty backdrop of a huge Victorian building.. We again staged some plays; feedback round- some fun, Ravi Teja did a Rajnikant act (mind it) - and then we returned to SR Ashram for more of unstructured discussion.. till cold and hunger made it impossible to stand and talk..

Day 3
The day began at 9.30 am with some informal feedback and discussion. Pramod ji gave a very nice Republic day speech, followed by the group singing Indian national anthem.

Shyam Sundar ji gave us a good presentation about marble industry. Ravi Teja gave a thought provoking talk about the recent suicide by a Research scholar at Hyderabad.

Random topics were given from a bowl full of small slips. Abhay did time-keeping. Outside under the trees, an interview panel was organised, consisting of Mrs Kathuria, Mr Fakhruddin Sheikh and Ms Indira Ramesh. Most interviewee did feel the heat but also enjoyed it. It was a good learning experience.

Madhav had a little stomach upset. Others were having un-ending discussions. Delhi group had planned to have the next communication workshop in Delhi - sometime in April. Some participants had plans of visiting Mussoorie (dont worry about the cold!).

Two new participants had come from Dehradun itself. They were quite impressed by our show at Gandhi park, in the heart of the town. They were advised to keep in touch with local SHG through Whatsapp. They too had their chance of giving ex-tempore presentations. At one point, we had a very interesting discussion about: In an arranged marriage, should the boy tell the girl about stammering in advance? (we will share the answer in the next workshop!!). We dispersed at 2 pm after group photo shoot. We hope to start a unit in TISA, dealing with families of PWS, with help from Dhruv's parents..

Introducing Mr. Sumit Kumar to TISA

Mr. Sumit Kumar, a PWS from Patiala  was in contact with me from last around 2 months through his father Shri Ramesh Kumar. He had obtained my number through TISA site. His father wanted to know about the cure from a disease named Stammering, thinking me that I am a doctor. I clarified that I am not a doctor and further stammering is not a disease and no medicine is available for it. I requested him to ask his son  to meet me at Chandigarh. But Sumit was hesitant. After some pursuations ultimately yesterday Sumit made a visit to my office and we had a chat for around an hour. Sumit Kumar is 22. He is B.Tech in Computer Science from MIMIT, Malout, Punjab. Presently he is undergoing a soft training in computer science from Chandigarh. After allowing him to introduce himself and asking him about his attitude towards stammering I explained about the concept of acceptance. Further stammering is not a disease and it cannot be cured but can successfully managed to a much extent. The basic three reasons associated with stammering i.e. Biological, Psychological and Social explained step by step. Further the three areas for working i.e. Breath, Speed and Excitement also explained. It was nice to notice that after some time he was talking openly about stammering. I added him to  Chandigarh WhattsApp SHG. I realized that now we have three PWS from Patiala. I motivated him to form a SHG at Patiala with Anupinder Singh and also gave his number. After the meeting he was feeling much relaxed. He was requested to remain connected with TISA Blogs. His mobile no is 99146 23555.   What I am feeling that still awareness about TISA is not much among people. We need to do something about it.

May all beings be Happy, Peaceful and Liberated.

Mumbai (Ghatkopar) SHG #112

"We're all the same, but unique. We're all part of the same life source, all evolved from the same ancestors."
"Stammering is a big deal" VS. "Stammering is no big deal" - who's being honest? who has better chances of recovery?...only by talking about them (painful times)...acknowledging them..accepting them...do they vanish...Let's talk about our pain..not deny it..

SHG today was something different. We had the privilege of having Abhinauv from Pune come to the meeting. I also asked him to be the host just yesterday - and he accepted like a champ!
